and water
The
largest of the English-speaking Caribbean
islands, Jamaica – the land of wood and water –
has long combined tourism and agriculture. The
annual Denbigh Agricultural Fair has been
enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for
decades. Jamaica’s food festivals, including the
Portland Jerk Festival, the Trelawny Yam
Festival, the Little Ochi Seafood Carnival and
the Old Harbour Fish and Bammy Festival have
attracted scores of visitor from home and abroad
for many years.

Jamaica – Agro Tourism is a growing area
Mrs.
Lorna Gooden, Manager, Social Services and Home
Economics, at the Rural Agricultural Development
Agency, is a trained home economist who has
worked with rural women since 1975. Her
department offers training in areas such as agro
processing, food and nutrition and child care
and development.

Jamaica – to develop a community tourism policy
At
a meeting at the Ministry of Tourism in January
2009, Mrs. Althea Heron, Snr. Director, Tourism
Policy and Monitoring, said that there is no
clear policy for agro tourism, although it is
mentioned in the Tourism Master Plan for Jamaica
as a niche segment for product diversification
and sustainability.
